Historical Background:

The name "Paarden Eiland" means "island of horses" in Afrikaans. It was named after the wild horses or zebras that once roamed the area during Jan van Riebeeck's time.
 

Originally a farming area, Paarden Eiland has transformed into an industrial powerhouse.
In 1935, it was officially designated as an industrial node, and in 1947, the Paarden Eiland Industrialists & Ratepayers Association was founded.
The area's industrialists later formed the Paarden Eiland City Improvement District (PECID) in 2006, contributing to cleanliness and security.
In 2016, the Cape Town city council approved an environmental and spatial planning policy for Paarden Eiland, encouraging economic development and efficient movement between east and west1.
