Introduction 

Cullinan is a small town in the Gauteng province of South Africa. It is located 30 km east of Pretoria along the diamond route and is heavily reliant on tourism and the mine that dominates the skyline. The town is named after diamond magnate Sir Thomas Cullinan. 

Features 

Cullinan is known for its rich history and picturesque setting. The town boasts a variety of outdoor attractions, including mine tours, walking down Oak Avenue with its curio shops, interesting restaurants, and the famous McHardy Museum. The town's architecture and restored mining houses add to its quaint charm. 

History 

Cullinan was established in 1903 after the discovery of the Cullinan kimberlite in 1902. The Premier mine, where the famed Cullinan Diamond was found in 1905, played a significant role in the town's development. The diamond, the largest in the world at 3,106 carats, was discovered by Frederick George Stanley Wells and later presented to King Edward VII. The town owes its existence to diamond mining, much like Kimberley in the Northern Cape. 

Climate 

Cullinan experiences a mild and moderate climate, with much more rainfall in the summer compared to winter. The mean yearly temperature is around 17.6°C. Summers are long, warm, and partly cloudy, while winters are short, cold, dry, and clear. The hottest month is January, with an average high of 27°C, and the coldest month is July, with an average low of 11.3°C.
