Introduction 

Port Elizabeth, now officially known as Gqeberha, is a major seaport and the most populous city in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is known for its rich cultural heritage, beautiful beaches, and as a gateway to the Eastern Cape's adventure and wildlife tourism.

History 

Port Elizabeth was established in 1820 as a British settlement around Fort Frederick. It was named by Sir Rufane Donkin, the acting governor of the Cape Colony, in honor of his late wife, Elizabeth. The city became a key port and industrial center, especially after the completion of the Kimberley Railroad in 1873. In 2021, the city was officially renamed Gqeberha.
